Death From Medical Mistakes and Corruption in the Health Industry

In the USA alone it has been recently estimated that some 210,000 patients died from medical mistakes in a year, making this the third leading cause of death while heart disease is the first and cancer second.
Can the above figure be used to expose the corruption in medicine?
The reason why it has taken so long to realise that something is not right and why so many still don't see that anything is going on can be explained like this:
On the whole, people: healthcare workers or patients or the public at large, can regard many circumstances in medicine as isolated cause and effect relationships. In other words, people generally fail to make the connections between the different cause and effect relationships.
It is necessary to make the connections so that we can step back and see the 'big picture' of what's really going on and why certain things occur. This can be likened to the analogy of looking at separated pieces of jigsaw puzzle and not having the realisation that they are somehow all connected and therefore not carrying out the task of joining up the pieces to see the big picture.
-Such has happened in the circumstances surrounding deaths from medical mistakes. This is why the corruption still continues and how the villains are allowed to get away with it. The big picture and the corruption comprise the connections between: The World Health Organisation, approval bodies such as the FDA, pharmaceutical companies, equipment manufacturers, academia, research institutions, media, the legal profession, healthcare staff and patients. -All these can be tied in with 'favours for favours... '
Nothing stays the same If everyone was concerned enough to get a deep enough level of realisation of what's really going on in medicine by connecting up the circumstances or pieces of information to find that they are interrelated (the big picture), then consequently, there would be a mass transformation of the healthcare system. This would eventually be brought about by the reactions that would follow from realising the corruption.
-This mass transformation is my vision: To see a major turnaround of the healthcare system, where treatment will be based on a genuine want to cure people. Where people are put before profits, instead of the reverse; the way it is at the moment.
It is also the visions of other activists and dissident Doctors, growing in numbers by the day. I would say that one of the biggest reasons why more and more people are realising that they are caught up in a scandal in medicine is through the availability of the internet and its access to information that would otherwise be very difficult to get. I also find that, in some of my discussions with people, I can see that their intuition has been already telling them that something is not right in the world of medicine...
I predict that, in time, whether it will take a few years or many decades I don't really know, but we will have a revolution on our hands. The healthcare system will change. I have no doubt that it will be a radical change.
The underlying cause, as I have said in previous writing, western world medicine should be truly outstanding considering the money spent, but it is not. Considering the facts and figures I have presented in earlier writing and the awful track record on the treatment of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many other degenerative illnesses, it can be concluded that:
Are deaths from medical mistakes THE biggest cause of death and suffering?
Every time deaths from medical mistakes (or deaths from medicine) are re-estimated, taking other factors into consideration the figure increases. Will we ever get a true figure?
Over the last few decades, the more technology that has been introduced into orthodox medicine be it, drugs, state-of-the-art equipment, apparatus, technical expertise... the more unnecessary procedures there are. I'm not for one minute saying that all technology is bad, but a lot of it can do a great deal of harm.
Doctors are tied up in a healthcare system that gives so much unnecessary treatment. This is the underlying reason why the system is quite simply not working well.

The Health Benefits Associated With Cinnamon

Don't you just love the aroma of cinnamon? It has such a warming smell and there's a reason for it too! Cinnamon has many health benefits-so if you like to use cinnamon it's an added bonus! The Fall time of the year when everyone is making pumpkin and apple recipes, add in that cinnamon-not only does it add a wonderful taste and smell, but wonderful health benefits as well!! Yay!
Let's talk about them:
  1. Helps to control and stabilize blood sugar levels (for Type 2 Diabetics-it stimulates more insulin production to lower blood sugar levels).
  2. Helps to lower bad cholesterol levels (they say just a ½ teaspoon a day!)
  3. Supports memory
  4. Cinnamon has anti-fungal properties-so it helps to diminish yeast and candida.
  5. It is also an anti-microbial, so it can help to stop the growth of bacteria.
  6. Cinnamon has powerful antioxidant properties-great for strong immune system. It has been used to treat coughs and sore throats way back in the medieval times.
  7. Has anti-inflammatory properties-it has been used to help with arthritis.
  8. It has even been said that cinnamon can help with Multiple Sclerosis
Uses:
  • I love to add it to my coffee or tea for a nice warming taste.
  • Of course it is good in desserts!
  • They say cinnamon is wonderful sprinkled on black beans for a different taste.
  • Good to sprinkle on your oatmeal.
  • It's wonderful to add in a Mexican chocolate cake (will have to get a recipe out for that too).
  • Add to your pancake batter.
  • Add to fresh, unsweetened apple cider
  • Sprinkled over fresh, dehydrated or baked apples
  • Add to yogurt with some honey and walnuts
  • Sprinkle on top of your coconut milk
  • Sprinkle on top of your cooked sweet potatoes
  • Add to rice for sweet taste
  • Add to cooked quinoa if using for a breakfast cereal
  • Sprinkle on a banana
So I'd have to say Cinnamon is a wonderful spice to keep in your pantry! Start adding it in here and there; try some of the options listed above and enjoy the warming aroma and know you're getting wonderful benefits to go along with it!
Sometimes it's fun just to put about a ½ tsp of cinnamon in a quart sized sauce pan with about 2 cups of water and let it simmer on low for a little while to let the cinnamon aroma fill the kitchen (just don't forget to turn off the stove after about 10 minutes).
As always, I'd love to know your thoughts and let me know your favorite way to use cinnamon!

The Health Concerns Among Immigrant Children

Many believe that quality health care is a fundamental human right and an antidote to the health care disparities that afflict a nation.
Children of immigrants are the fastest growing component of the child population. While immigrants are 11 percent of the total U.S. population, children of immigrants make up 22 percent of the 23.4 million children less than 6 in the United States. Correlatively, policies affecting young children and their families will increasingly be judged by their effects on the health, well-being, and school readiness of children of immigrants.
Why do immigrant's children have such limited health care access? Much of the reason is related to insurance coverage and financial access; they also face other barriers like:
-Language barriers limit access. If patients know they will have difficulty explaining their medical needs or problems to a doctor or nurse, they are less willing to seek care. About 30% of the foreign born do not speak English or do not speak it well.
-Cultural differences also play a role. The medical care system is organized differently in the US than in immigrant's home countries and managed care can be particularly difficult to navigate.
-Immigrants may have different perceptions of the need and appropriateness of medical care. The need for preventive care may be less familiar. In many countries, seeking help for mental health problems is stigmatized.
-Finally, legal status can be a concern. Unauthorized immigrants often worry that seeking care, particularly at a public facility, may lead to exposure of tier unauthorized status and increase the risk of sanctions such as deportation. Even legal immigrants may worry that using benefits could jeopardize their legal status and perhaps make it harder to gain citizenship or permanent residency.
Poverty is one of the most important predictors of negative child outcomes. Poverty rates are generally higher among children of immigrants than among children of natives and highest for young children of immigrants. Although children of immigrants are more likely to be in two-parent families, the second parent in these families is less likely to work. Immigrants earn lower wages, leading to lower family incomes. Low educational attainment and limited English proficiency which results in low performance in school and later in the labor force. At the same time, children of immigrants score lower on measures of parent-child interaction at young age.
Parents with less formal education appear less likely to enroll their children in center-based care or preschool. They may also have fewer resources at home such as books or computers to prepare their children for school.
They are also less likely to be taken on outings-such as to the grocery store, a park, a church, or a playground-than children of natives. These gaps may be associated with relatively high poverty and low educational attainment in immigrant families.
Economic hardship rates rise, and gaps between immigrant and native families narrow for food hardship measures. Over half of young, low-income children of immigrants live in families with one or more food-related problems.
Optimal childhood health is recognized as a key determinant of well-being and productivity throughout life. Early childhood in particular is increasingly viewed as a critical period in which adverse conditions and events can significantly influence subsequent physical and mental health status. For example nutritional deficits and toxic environmental exposure in both the prenatal months and in early childhood have been linked to a range of chronic conditions in adulthood, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, lung disease, and diabetes. Associations have also been found between psychosocial stressors in childhood-such as socio emotional and economic deprivation - and the development of mental and physical problems later in life.
Additionally, childhood health is likely to influence the social and economic integration of immigrants. Experts regard delays in cognitive development during early childhood as a key reason for educational and social equality later in life. More specifically, children with cognitive and other delays in preschool are more likely to become high school dropouts and to experience delinquency, unemployment, low earnings, and dissatisfaction with their adult lives than their otherwise similar peers. Early cognitive development is also closely linked with physical health and overall well being.
Another major childhood health condition, obesity, is linked to a number of serious health issues, including hypertension, elevated blood pressure, cancer, and diabetes. Beyond its impact on physical health and mortality, obesity is related to difficulties in social adjustment, poor mental health, and lower academic achievement - factors that in turn have wide-ranging implications for children's quality of life and productivity as adults.
Additionally, children of immigrants may be at higher risk for certain conditions. For eg; pesticide exposure is a problem among children of migrant workers. Immigrant children may be less up to date on certain immunizations, particularly DtaP, Hib, and Hep-B. Health risks appear to vary greatly depending on the origins of immigrant parents, with children of Latino immigrants often the most at risk.
Nearly one in every four US children has an immigrant parent; promoting health of children in immigrant families will maximize the long-term well - being and productivity of tomorrow's adults. Policies targeting children of immigrants should promote access to health care, high-quality child care, healthy diets, and physical activity.

Enjoy the Natural Taste and Aroma and Get the Health Benefits With Traditional English Tea

  • The permission of tea trade led to hundreds of coffee shops sprouting up in London and the traditional breakfasts and dinners were reformulated to include tea. The standard drink of ale at an English breakfast was soon pushed aside and replaced with traditional English-style tea.
  • Another tradition that soon took hold in England was the tradition of serving English-style afternoon tea. Afternoon tea is said to be credited to Anna, the 7thDuchess of Bedford in the early 19th century. The story is told that she was unable to muster through from breakfast to the normal dinner time, which didn't occur until approximately 8-9 pm, without experiencing hunger. Anna would order along with bread and butter and a pastry or cake in the afternoon. This tradition soon took hold among her friends and from there, having afternoon became a popular tradition.
  • Many Americans mistake afternoon tea for high tea; however, there is a difference. Afternoon tea is usually served between 2-5 pm and high (or sometimes referred to as meat tea) is served with the late evening meal. The traditional afternoon tea most commonly includes any of the following servings:
  • Light Tea: This afternoon break comes with a serving of tea, as well as scones and other delectable treats.
  • Cream Tea: This afternoon delight serves tea and scones along with jam and cream.
  • Full Tea: This is the whole ball of wax; it is a serving of tea as well as a three course snack of savories, which includes finger sandwiches or appetizers; scones served with cream or jam; and pastries, including cookies, sweets, cakes, and/or shortbread.
  • The English-style loose teas that are served with afternoon can vary depending on personal preference. Some of the more common might include any one of a number of flavors of Earl Grey, black, or white gourmet loose leaf tea. Regardless of the type, afternoon tea, along with the snack, is a mid-day boost that will re-energize the body to get through the rest of the day and last until dinner.
  • As well as the afternoon tea tradition, English-style teas can also be found in a variety of breakfast flavors, such as black tea. These teas have a robust flavor and distinct aroma that is sure to trigger the senses and get you moving in the morning. Earl Grey are popular any time of the day. They are seasoned with bergamot oil and can include one or a combination of Chinese black, green or white loose leaf, Ceylon, or South India teas.
  • Don't be led astray and think that these teas are only available to the English; all of the teas, as well as the traditions can be enjoyed around the world. The English set the tone and now the Western world is catching on and figuring out what all the fuss is about. Has the Health and Safety Pendulum Swung Too Far?

Mark the 1st April 2015 in your diaries now. This is the date that the revised New Zealand Health and Safety at Work Act comes into force. If the NZ government has anything to do with it (and after all, it wrote the thing; well the Australian Government did!) this Act will change the face of Health and Safety as we know it.
With some aggressive targets of reducing work-place deaths by 25% over the next five years, this bill has wide-reaching impact. In summary some of the major changes will be:
An expanding vocabulary
The Act will introduce some new concepts (and words) to the life of virtually everyone involved in enterprise. Firstly there's the concept of a 'worker'. Note that this is nothing to do with their employment status. The fact that someone in your office or factory is self-employed has no bearing. They are a worker in your workplace.
A new acronym, the "PCBU" rears its head. This a Person in Charge of a Business or Undertaking and might be a company or corporation. Note the absence of the word 'employer'. The PCBU's main responsibility it to ensure the Health and Safety of all people at the worksite, including employees, clients, visitors, contractors (and their subbies). PCBUs can be companies (and any person who is deemed to be in a position of a Director, whatever their actual title), partnerships and body corps.
The PCBU will have some Officers. Officers are people who make decisions that affect the whole business (or a substantial part of it). Generally, Staff are not Officers, nor Line Managers or Supervisors.
However, there is bound to be lots of legal fun when the time comes draw the lines between Directors, CEOs and Senior Managers and how each role is defined within the terms of the Act. The legal constitution of the company will be important here, as will their processes of corporate governance and their Board structure.
Officers will no longer have the power to delegate responsibility. Instead they will inherit a formal positive duty to ensure the whole Governance, Risk and Health & Safety structures are functioning well. This due diligence also includes the need to acquire and maintain a current knowledge of workplace H & S issues. Officers will also need to ensure the PCBU has appropriate resources and process to eliminate or reduce risks.
A culture of safety
A new emphasis in on the word engagement. PCBUs now have a duty to engage workers in the entire Health and Safety culture. Simply informing them is not enough; workers are entitled to contribute to the decision making process, raise issues and express their views.
Workers can be represented by Health and Safety Reps (HSRs) and/or Health and Safety Committees (HSPs), and workers must be provided with reasonable opportunities to engage with these on an ongoing basis. Training for HSPs has become a major new focus, with the PCBU being under a duty to provide that training without cost and at normal pay.
Once an HSR has been trained, they can issue a Provisional Improvement Notice (or PIN) in effect giving notice to the PCBU that an item of equipment, for instance, is in their view unsafe and cannot be used. Although the PCBU has the right to appeal, the PIN may not be removed until after the appeal process has been completed.
PINs can be escalated to the status of Improvement Notices, then onto Prohibition Notices. It is these areas that PCBUs are most likely to come into contact with Worksafe, who will provide a team of inspectors to advise and enforce.
Workers have a right to cease unsafe work, although the PCBU can redirect the worker to other tasks that are appropriate for that worker.
Summing Up
In summary, the new Act seems to be placing a lot of emphasis on the concepts of process, due diligence, verification, transparency and reporting. In fact there seems to be a whole lot of sticks, with the carrots few and far between.
In the 'stick' department, the types of offences which can be committed under the Act have been categorised under three headings:
Reckless Conduct (the most serious breach). Penalties include fines of up $3m and/or 5 years in jail for Officers
Failure to Comply with a Duty, Causing an Exposure to Risk. Fines range up to $1.5m, including individual Officer
Failing to Comply with a Duty (a "technical breach") Fines go up to $500k, again including individual Officers
Remember that Officers can be found guilty of a breach, even if the PCBU has not been convicted.
On the positive (carrot) side, of course lots of this is based on common sense, and the government can be applauded for trying to reduce workplace deaths and harm substantially over the next few years.
They appear to be taking a reasoned approach to the legislation, and Worksafe have indicated that their role will be one of mentors and advisers initially. However, it's pretty safe to say that the big sticks will come out after the first few years. Being one of their first test cases taken to court will not be a pleasant experience!

Type 2 Diabetes - The Health of Both Parents Influences Their Newborn's Health

Health care has traditionally focused on mothers for producing healthy babies. Now it seems the health of both parents before conception is important. Investigators at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, USA, compared parental health before conception with newborn health factors known to put the newborn at risk for health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes.
Their study, reported on in the Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics in November 2014, included 372 babies and their parents. It was found the birth weight was highest in infants born to mothers with...
  • diabetes or high blood pressure, or
  • who drank alcohol at least once a month.
The rate of prematurity was...
  • slightly higher than average in infants of mothers who suffered from depression.
Birth weights were...
  • lower than average for infants of diabetic fathers.
The rate of prematurity was...
  • higher than average in infants of diabetic parents with high levels of fast food consumption.
From these results the investigators concluded starting before conception, mothers and fathers should take steps to prevent developing Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure - and consume as little alcohol and fast food as possible. Studies have proven unequivocally Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or at least delayed for years.
Fortunately, the above health issues of the parents can all be handled with the one eating plan and increased physical activity...
  • instead of alcohol, spritz some seltzer with lime juice.
  • instead of relying on fast foods on your lunch break, make a salad the night before and eat it in a nearby park. While you're there, if time permits, go for a short walk.
  • in the early morning or evening, walk your dog or volunteer to walk dogs at a dog rescue shelter.
  • park your car as far as possible away from where you work and walk the rest of the way. Ride a bicycle to work if it's feasible. You will not only do your body a favor, but help to clean up the atmosphere as well.
If you think salad is boring, try Thai vegetable and smoky eggplant salad from FoodAndWine.com. It calls for purple eggplants, lime leaves, lime juice, soy sauce, red Thai chile, light brown sugar (substitute), garlic clove, avocado, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, red onion, chives, mint, and cashews. Or try a kale salad from OhSheGlows.com. You will need kale, garlic cloves, lemon juice, olive oil, black pepper, and cranberries. RawVeganPower.com suggests making apple salad with apple, fennel bulbs, walnuts, vinaigrette and vegan macadamia "cheese."
Even small changes in lifestyle can produce big results.
Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
